Most
people think the average teenager isn’t capable of much
beyond hanging with their friends and wasting time. But Zach
Hunter isn’t your average teenager. He's only fifteen,
but he's working to end slavery in the world — and he's
making changes that affect millions of people. |

Zach
has been trying to end slavery around the globe. Most people
think that slavery has been over for a long time. But sadly,
there are more people bound in slavery now than at any time.
Today an estimated 27 million people are in slavery —
more than in the 400 years of the Trans-Atlantic slave trade.
Zach is working to end slavery and free the men, women, and
children who are being held against their will. He is leading
a revolution, mobilizing students to end slavery in their
generation. He knows (because he is one) that teenagers want
to give their lives to something big, and right now there’s
not much bigger than ending the trade of human beings around
the globe. Zach is ready to help them understand what they
can do by providing stories to ignite their passion and practical
tools to mobilize them into action.
Just look around the world and on the news and you’ll
find that there are plenty of things wrong with our planet
— homelessness, hunger, global warming, AIDS…
the list goes on and on. And we usually look at these problems
and decide they’re too big for us to do anything about.
But Zach is proving that one person can make a difference. |

When
I heard about how slavery was going on in the world, I just
thought that was really, really unfair, so I decided to start
the Loose Change to Loosen Chains campaign because I’ve
always sort of had a sense of right and wrong and a sense
of justice. I started it so that I could free slaves.

More
than 5,000 children are being forced to work as sex slaves
in the UK, including thousands trafficked into the country
by criminal gangs, reports The Independent on Sunday. A study
of global slavery exposed Britain as a major transit point
for the movement of child slaves around the world. Commissioned
by social research charity the Joseph Rowntree Foundation,
the report paints a shocking picture of an international web
of gangmasters exploiting children as young as five, as well
as vulnerable women. Many are threatened with violence, then
sold into the sex trade or forced to become domestic servants,
says the report. The human trafficking trade now generates
an estimated $10 billion a year worldwide, making it the second
biggest international criminal industry after the drugs trade.
Children's charities in Britain say there has been a "dramatic"
rise in referrals of trafficked children to sexual exploitation
services. An investigation has found that gangs, especially
those from Romania and Lithuania as well as Africa, are increasingly
targeting Britain because markets in other European countries
such as Spain and Italy are saturated. |

Be
the Change
Your guide to freeing slaves and changing the world in other
ways
Zach
Hunter is a fifteen-year-old abolitionist and activist, spending
much of his time working to end slavery around the world.
He's the student spokesperson for The Amazing Change Campaign,
which is inspired by the film Amazing Grace. Last year he
spoke to almost a half a million people and is educating and
inspiring students everywhere to make a change in the world.
He also founded Loose Change to Loosen Chains, a student run
effort to help raise money to free slaves. Other than that,
he's just your average, typical teenage guy. Modern-day slavery
may be people working in brick kilns, rice mills, fishing
villages, or brothels. In his book, Be the Change, Zach reveals
the elements needed to make amazing changes in the world.
In the end, he hopes others will find the thing they’re
passionate about — and start making changes!

Terrify

Young Girls Held Captive and the Daring Undercover Operation
to Win Their Freedom
Gary
Haugen, president of Christian humanitarian organization International
Justice Mission, peoples this account of efforts to rescue
young girls from forced prostitution in Cambodia, with larger-than-life
heroes and villains. He tells of girls sold into sex slavery
by their families or tricked into it by the promise of legitimate
work. IJM members, posing as customers, infiltrated the brothels,
interviewed the girls and later staged successful rescue operations.
Haugen credits the success of his work to God ("I believe
we all yearn for the joy that arrives when we find our own
active place in the struggle against evil and discover the
transforming power of life the Divine has granted to mere
mortals") and shrugs off doubters ("Some Christians
are uncomfortable with the idea that God has been in a dark,
repulsive brothel. Our investigators are not only comfortable
with the idea, it's a truth they count on").

There's
too much to do and not enough time. You've got school, homework,
job, friends, parties, and family on top of everything else.
You're totally stressed out. You feel as if your life is out

day life?

Let's
face it — parents don't get it. Or at least that's what
many teenaged children think. Most teens think their parents
don't know anything about life — especially not teen
life. As a result, they stay quiet, ignore their parents’
advice, or argue and yell. But it doesn’t have to be
this way.
